We pride ourselves on the durability and quality of our grasses, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a better time of year to lay the turf. Consider the following advice:
Spring: The best time to lay turf in Australia
Without a doubt, spring is the best time to lay turf and plant in your garden. This is the time of year when foliage is flourishing and new shoots are beginning to appear. The weather is also not too hot and there is still some reasonable rainfall around to water provide enough water.
Laying Turf in Winter
Even in this scorched brown land of ours, winter can get very cold in certain regions of Australia. In the coldest areas, it is best not to lay down grass turf during this time. If you live in a place like South Australia, or in the west, then the winter is most likely to be milder. In a case like this, you can lay down the turf as long as the soil is already prepared and weeded thoroughly. In general, however, it’s best to wait for spring if you can.
Laying Turf in Autumn
This is still a really good time of year to plant your lawn, but it is best to do it early before the winter starts to come in. It’s better if your grass is already established before the frost and cold weather really hits. In regions of Australia where the autumns are generally milder, you can probably get away with laying down the turf a little later in the season.
Laying Turf in Summer
Despite the fact that Aussie summers can get very hot, it is still a pretty good time of the year to lay down grass turf. Buffalo grass, in particular, is tough enough to get through a hot summer. If you really must plant during summer though, just remember that you’ll need to water the grass every day to keep the roots moist. If the roots dry out, grass that is not yet established will start to dry out and die. This is the last thing you want when you have invested so much time and effort into the project!
